There’s this one scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding that pretty much sums up my feelings on coconut oil. In case you haven’t seen it, Gus Portokalos, one of the film’s main characters uses Windex for everything from psoriasis to poison ivy. That folks, in a nutshell, is how I feel about coconut oil. Just ask anyone I know, and they’ll tell you how much I swear by this stuff. Especially since I use it (we’re talking 4 huge jarfuls!) in a multitude of ways most people simply wouldn’t understand. And although I’ve tried my fair share of coconut oils, I’m really loving the NEW! Vita Coco Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and its organic and non-greasy formula that has me totally addicted!

What Is Oil Pulling? Is It Healthy? How Does It Benefit/Treat Your Skin And Teeth?

Some may think that using oil is bad for your skin. But, in the wintertime, using essential oils can help balance your skin and restore lost moisture. With that said, if you have been avoiding oils, hopefully, I’ll change your mind. Dying to know exactly how I use this pure and natural bad-boy? Check out these 5 sensational ways I’m incorporating coconut oil into my beauty routine.

DIY Scrub

As the temperature drop, the harsh and cold air can leave your vulnerable skin chapped and extra dry. That’s why it’s important to add exfoliation to your beauty routine. To shed away dead skin cells and keep your skin glowing, making a DIY scrub is always a handy skin remedy. To make a natural and non-toxic scrub, I love using Raw Turbinado Sugar and coconut oil for that skin-renewing scrub promoting cellular turnover without clogging pores. Simply mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with 1 tablespoon raw sugar, and use 2-3 times a week for supple, radiant skin.

Shaving Cream

Coconut oil also makes for a great shaving cream or hair conditioner, as it contains good fats that condition skin and hair time and time again. To make your own leave-in conditioner, treat your fried ends to a mixture of water and coconut oil for smooth and hydrated locks, or, use as a deep conditioning treatment once a week.

Double-Cleanse Makeup Remover

One of my all-time favorite ways to use coconut oil though is as a makeup remover, thanks to its thick, buttery consistency. A must for those seeking organic beauty alternatives, this pure product doesn’t expose skin to harmful chemicals or ingredients. For best results, simply take a quarter-size amount of oil, rub into hands and apply onto a damp face. Follow with your favorite cleanser and warm water, and watch stubborn mascara, liner and shadow fade away.

Oil Pulling

Another popular way to use this super ingredient is for oil pulling, which has you swirling a tablespoon or two of oil in your mouth to ward away everything from gingivitis to bad breath. Although I’m still new to this trend, it doesn’t hurt hurt to give your pearly whites a little added defense, especially since this ancient practice is known for its dental benefits.

But if you’re looking for a fast and easy way to use it, just grab a scoop and use as either a body moisturizer or lip balm; its deeply hydrating formula banishes away flaky dry skin. Plus, I just love the shiny sheen it gives your hands after application. Don’t you?
