When I was in high school, only raccoon-eyed scene girls rocked cotton candy pink and mermaid blue hair. Fast forward to 2014, and everyone from Lauren Conrad to Nicole Richie is test driving pastel locks. I want pastel hair now more than I ever did as a punk wannabe in 2004.

But not all of us are professional pretty people who can go to work with all-over lavender hair. Or want to deal with the maintenance of bleaching, toning and waking up with Manic Panic-stained pillowcases. And some of us are just natural redheads terrified of frying our hair and ending up with a color that clashes with ginger (just me?).

Luckily, the new Hot Head extensions let you achieve your My Little Pony hair dreams with zero chemicals and no damage. The stylists at Pierre Michel apply as many extensions as you want with an adhesive weft (think real hair in technicolors), attached to extra-strength double stick tape. They look just like real highlights, can be washed and styled, and won’t rip out your hair. No one has to know you skipped the bleach for a quick fix!

Hot Head extensions are totally customizable in trendy shades like peach, turquoise and lavender. You can mix and match shades or even sandwich in a ribbon (I chose lavender with the girliest possible pink ribbon, obviously) for a real fantasy look.

There’s absolutely no risk since they remove easily, so go nuts! Hot Heads last longer than hair chalk (about 8 weeks) but have none of the commitment or damage of bleaching and dying. Want them out early? Just pop back into the salon. Full Disclosure: I decided after a few days at the office to yank out one of the ribbons, and was able to tease it out with a double dose of conditioner while leaving the lavender highlight intact. Definitely not recommended, but proof that this is the perfect way to test drive summer’s girliest hair trend without fear.

Hot Head extensions are also much easier than dyed highlights for the girl on a time crunch. Mine were done in just a few minutes, and I was trimmed and styled in less than an hour. You’ll spend more time Instagram-ing your My Little Pony locks than you do in the chair. Adhesive extensions are also available at Pierre Michel in a full range of “natural” hair colors.
