NY Fashion Week is once again upon us, and while everyone is mesmerized by pastels, metallics and flowers I was mesmerized by the hair. All of the breathtaking fashion was nicely juxtaposed with hair of different textures and shapes. Rodney Cutler of Cutler Salons and hairstylist Guido from Redken helps us breakdown the hair trends for Spring 2012.

The biggest trend on the runway was the “wet” hair look. Models’ hair ranged from completely drenched to slightly damp in strategic places, like at Elie Saab.

The differentiating feature for this season was the use of texture. Instead of slicking hair straight or into a ponytail as past seasons, the hair had waves and curls like at Alberta Ferretti and Diesel Black Gold. Guido described this hair as “sexy, summery and uncomplicated.” To achieve this look you can use a variety of products.

Any shine mist such as Redken’s Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist or oil products, such as Redken’s All Soft Argan 6 Multi-Care Oil can be used to create these styles. Remember, this style is really about effortlessness with a natural texture so make it just that, easy.

Seen on many of the runways from Calvin Klein to Balenciaga, this trend is an uber-cool, natural look with some chic slight bends in the hair. As if the models had done their own hair for the show, this look was about ease and simplicity and truly working the “undone” done style.

To achieve this look begin with free, blow-dried hair, add a bit of curl at the
end and then brush through. If you have more of a curl to your hair like me, remember that second day blown out locks will be perfect for this look. Before bed, put your hair in a top knot or low bun and the next morning your hair will look undone, but done.

If you want to add a bit more flare Culter suggests adding a fishtail braid as a headband accessory like he did at Tadashi Shoji (pictured above). My favorite of the trends is the eclectic variety of updos. These ranged from modern beehives at Louis Vuitton to buns embellished with jewelry at Yves Saint Laurent.

The beauty of these updos was that each look was unique. Two of the most wearable were the looks Guido created at Bottega Veneta and at 3.1 Phillip Lim. At Bottega Veneta, the style was a low bun with lots of loose pieces — that glistening just-walked-off-the-beach look. Easy to do and extremely versatile for day or night. The other look was a low bun with loose falling pieces, ever so strategically placed.

Some other noteworthy looks were at Jean Paul Gaultier and Jason Wu. Both these styles were truly works of art.

This season trends encompassed the easy elegance of spring and summer. Constructed with months of thought and work, these styles are far from difficult to achieve at home. Each one is easy to emulate and even more easy to wear.
