The great hair stylists this season were busy creating New York chic looks, but also managed to shake things up a bit, with mile-high ’60s inspired coifs. Orlando Pita, Odile Gilbert, Warren-Tricomi and Guido Paulo were the masterminds behind these looks.
There were a couple of voluminous looks that scooted down the runway. The first batch were voluminous bouffant faux bobs that had a sixties feel but were modernized with different textures. Models at Chadwick Bell, Derek Lam and Rodarte were among the few that sported faux bob bouffants with a chaotic undertone. Each look was unique in the interpretation of the bob, but had distinct features: Rodarte was swept to one side, textured throughout with a few face framing bobby pins and hair jewelry; Chadwick Bell had a bob with a few pulled pieces to create a look that resembled a, “perfect woman in the most imperfect situation.” At Derek Lam, Gilbert created a bouffant that broke the rigid rules of the ’60s coiffing norms.
The second big style was a tailored interpretation of voluminous hair. Instead of creating a disheveled mile-high look, these looks were sleek with volume and headbands that adorned the front. Carolina Herrera wanted “big, big hair” so Orlando Pita created a look that was among the biggest; extreme volume throughout the crown that was slightly pushed back with a sleek headband. Pita also created the look at Oscar de la Renta (also pictured above). This look was perfected with a bejeweled headband to make the models look like, “young girls playing dress up.” The last perfected updo was as Moschino. Gilbert created a French twist that was also adorned with a headband.
The key to these looks is the abundance of volume. The type of volume the hairstylists created needs to be done by teasing the hair. Products and blow-drying can help, but the most important items are a back comb and some hairspray. Odile Gilbert created the look at Moschino with just hairspray stating, “It’s easy — that’s it!” Pita created his looks by using T3 360 Elevate Heat Seeking Iron Volumizer and teasing the hair. To differ the looks between Oscar de La Renta and Carolina Herrera he backcombed the hair up to different points on the head, creating different types of volume. To achieve the disheveled look at Rodarte and Derek Lam they left the top section of hair teased and backcombed creating texture.
These high volume, high impact looks work great for a night out whether you are out clubbing or just at a bar. Mixing elegance with cool, these looks will truly take you to great heights!
