We all know just how bad the sun is for our skin. Wrinkles, dark spots and melanoma are all linked to sun exposure. But who wants to look pasty and pale all summer long? That’s where the faux tanners come in.

According to L’Oréal, the Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist ($10.99) in Deep Natural Tan; also available in Medium Natural Tan) gives you, “gorgeous salon-perfect tan at home. Inspired by professional techniques, the new Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist comes with a wide-angle jet applicator and provides continuous 360° coverage for ultra-even, long-lasting results.

This super-fine mist, with a fresh new citrus scent, applies evenly and flash-dries, with no need to rub in. No streaks, just a lovely, natural-looking tan.”

I liked the idea of that! While it’s easy to fake a tan on your face with the skillful use of bronzers and foundation, faking a tan on arms and legs is considerably harder. My previous attempts were not successful, so I was eager to try this new product.

I used it over a period of several days on my legs and the tops of my feet (otherwise the tan stops at the ankles, which looks strange).
The results were mixed: On the plus side, the mist is indeed easy-to-apply, does not require rubbing and has a fresh pleasant smell.

And although the color was a tad more orange than I would have preferred, it was not too bad and gave my legs a decent glow that lasted for a week.

As far as the application process goes, I learned that you do have to avoid spraying too close, otherwise streaks and drips will appear: It’s important to apply a spray sunless tanner in a good, strong light — having a friend spray you is even better!

Also, I noticed that when I tanned my feet, the mist settled and pooled under them, unbeknownst to me. When I looked later, I saw that the soles of my feet had been stained dark brown, which caused some raised eyebrows when I went to get a pedicure.

Overall, I’d give this product a B+. The price is super and the application/results are pretty good. Maybe I need to watch a self-tanning tutorial on YouTube to refine my technique.
