Preview Aveda 2014: Actress Mary-Louise Parker Supports Earth Month With Light The Way Candle
Last week, actress Mary-Louise Parker visited the Aveda Institute on Spring Street in NYC to show her support for Aveda Earth Month 2014 clean water initiatives. She spent some time in the Institute looking at the Catwalk for Water “trashion” dresses made of recycled materials and created by Aveda stylists across the world. She also purchased an Earth Month Light the Way Candle for $12.

Light the Way™ Candle 2014

“It’s been amazing to see Aveda’s Earth Month fundraising initiatives, especially the Catwalk for Water ‘trashion’ dresses. I try to teach my kids the importance of recycling. I turn old things, like old hotel room keys and stuff lying around, into games for them. Aveda’s Earth Month efforts perfectly align with my personal mission to help create a cleaner, safer world.” — Mary-Louise Parker

As part of our Earth Month efforts, Aveda is donating 100% of the purchase price (based on its SRP $12) of its signature limited-edition Light the Way™ Candles to Global Greengrants Fund, a non-profit that channels high-impact grants to grassroots groups working to solve pressing environmental problems.

The images on this year’s Light the Way™ Candle carton were drawn by children living in the Umbari, India village who benefited from a grant supported by Aveda and Global Greengrants Fund to AWARD (Action for Women in Rural Development) to improve the local water system. The illustrations express the joy that having easy access to clean water has brought to their lives: clean water for people, plants and animals. www.aveda.com.

About Aveda Earth Month – Since 1999 Aveda has raised over $32M to help support organizations that directly affect environmental change. More than $26M of that amount has supported clean water projects at home and around the world. Last year Aveda’s Earth Month efforts raised a total of $5.5 million for Clean Water and set a Guinness World Record for the Most Money Raised for Charity Through Haircuts in a 24 Hour Period during our Global Cut-A-Thon. This year we are aiming to up the Earth Month ante to $6 million.

After a season of pastels, I am ready for some rich tones. Welcome Aveda Autumn 2013 Limited Edition Makeup Collection: HeartLands. These rich shades mimic the look of just arriving indoors from a brisk fall day, which is captured with berry lips and warm, shimmery tones around the eyes.

Dusk Orchid

Ginger Root

I recreated the look featured on the website: it was really easy and very flattering. I swept Petal Essence Single Color in Ginger Root on my eyelids, added some mascara but left the rest of my face bare except for a swipe of the Sweet Plum Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color.

Bronze Patina

I didn’t know how I’d look because the look is so different from what I usually wear, but I really liked it! All the shades resemble the colors you would find in nature.

Ginger Root is a warm copper, tawny shade; Dusk Orchid is a bruised eggplant; Viridian is a slate green; Antique Gold is a dirty, shimmery gold; Bronze Patina is a mossy green and Hyacinth is a light, satiny, lavender violet (not swatched).

Salon Tips

Makeup Review, Swatches: Aveda Spring 2013 Collection: Art of Nature - Mineral Lip Color, Eyeshadow, Lip Glaze, Liners, Blush

I was so excited to receive the Aveda Spring 2013 Color Collection: Art of Nature. In line with Aveda‘s brand image, the packaging is simple: a clear clamshell case houses a single pan of Petal Essence Single Eye Color ($14.00) eyeshadow in a cardboard package.

I was slightly disappointed — I am used to a compact, yet, I found the single pan awkward to use. Aveda does offer Total Face Envirometal Compact ($16.00-28.00), which keeps your color, and your environmentalism, close at hand.

The colors are clean and bright. The shades are wearable; there is something for all skintones. The shades definitely transported me to a spring day — you can almost smell the flowers.

The Petal Essence Single Eye Colors are beautiful and provide a sheer wash of color. The lip colors range from a sheer peach, Sheer Mineral Lip Color ($16.00) in Melochia Bloom to the Smoothing Lip Color  ($16.00) in a vibrant red, Cana. The Smoothing Lip Color wears well and feels comfortable. These lip colors deliver moisturize to lips while providing full color.

The third lip color is the Rehydrating Lip Glaze ($18.00) in Kukui. The lip glaze surprised me! In the tube it looks very dark, however, upon application, the color translates into a wearable neutral. All have Nourish-Mint — a delightful vanilla-mint flavor.

Just as Aveda promises, the eyeshadows do not crease and lasts for hours. The Lip Liners ($16.00) did their job preventing feathering and helping the lipstick wear longer. Barberry Bloom and Cana make the perfect pair; Cocoa Bean blends well with Kukui.

Review, Before/After Photos: Aveda Invanti System – Hair Thickening, Revitalizing Shampoo, Conditioner, Scalp Spray

Review, Before/After Photos: Aveda Invanti System - Hair Thickening, Revitalizing Shampoo, Conditioner, Scalp Spray

Thicker hair via head massage? Perhaps — when it’s part of a hair care system promising to stimulate your roots as you give yourself a moment of relaxation. Aveda s new Invati System claims to thicken hair and reduce hair loss due to breakage within four weeks, with the full effect achieved after twelve. The line uses densiplexTM, an invigorating blend of ayurvedic herbs, including turmeric and ginseng, promising to remove build-up, restore strength and energize the scalp.

Aveda strives to connect beauty, the environment and well-being — infusing this mantra into all of their products. It’s a great company to stand by because they “continually strive to increase the use of naturally derived ingredients,” where 50% of the molecule comes from a plant, non-petroleum mineral, or other natural source (like water) and now more than 90% of their essential oils and 89% of their raw herbal ingredients are certified organic.

Aveda sent me the entire system: the Exfoliating Shampoo ($24.00), Thickening Conditioner ($24.00) and Scalp Revitalizer ($60.00). Being the overexcited hair enthusiast that I am, I was eager to try this so-called “new-technology.” I used the
products for four weeks, so the results I experienced were in the beginning stages of using this system, not after the full twelve week cycle.

Before

Review, Before/After Photos: Aveda Invanti System - Hair Thickening, Revitalizing Shampoo, Conditioner, Scalp Spray

I began with the Exfoliating Shampoo, which promises to renew and nourish the scalp. It is one of eight groundbreaking products honored with Gold-level Cradle to Cradle® certification, a program that assesses a product’s safety to humans and the environment. The entire Invati System smells similar to all Aveda products: an earthy blend of lavender and other essential oils, infused with a light turmeric note. Because Aveda prides its products being all-natural, the shampoo does not foam like many other shampoos do; make sure to limit the amount used depending on your hair length.

Also a Gold-level Cradle to Cradle® certified product, the Thickening Conditioner came next, which I applied from roots to ends. It promises to reduce breakage, improve hair elasticity and thicken hair. Once I towel-dried, I was able to detangle my hair easily. The Scalp Revitalizer spray was the last step in the system. According to Aveda , the product uses a blend of vitamin E ingredients to help accelerate microcirculation with a therapeutic massage. It is supposed to help energize and rehabilitate the scalp around the follicles when massaged in.

As directed, I sprayed the product into my scalp sixteen times (eight times on each side), massaging it in twice a day for the entire month’s cycle. It tingled a little after each application (I guess that means it was working). As time went on, I began
noticing thicker hair, which is always a huge plus in any book.

After

Review, Before/After Photos: Aveda Invanti System - Hair Thickening, Revitalizing Shampoo, Conditioner, Scalp Spray

It is always comforting to use products that are eco-friendly, natural and pleasant, so, testing Invati was a real treat. Additionally, the products leave that yummy Aveda scent on the hair all day long. Even if the photos do not show much of a difference in volume, I did notice less and less hair in the drain as the month progressed. This factor was definitely a plus, especially because I had been using the product for only four weeks.

I did however, have mixed feelings about the Scalp Revitalizer. The $60.00 price tag seems hefty for the results I had seen. Having to spray it in twice a day at times weighed down my hair, making it feel/look greasier than usual. A factor which made using the product a bit of a burden. One could only use it once a day, especially if she/he has limp hair, but then the thickening process is prolonged and less effective.

Less hair loss made me a very happy camper knowing I wouldn’t need to purchase any Drano this season! I’d be curious to see the progression of my hair if I had continued to use these products for the full cycle. Though, for consumers to have to spend over $300.00 to see the full effect doesn’t seem so encouraging. But hey, what we wouldn’t do in the name of good hair?!
