How To Get Into The Beauty Industry – Cosmetic Executive Women 2012 Achievement Awards: Business, Career Tips
On Monday, November 12th, the beauty industry honor five of its most accomplished and high-achieving women at its 37th Annual Achiever Awards luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
The annual CEW Achiever Awards recognized the achievements of the cosmetics industry’s most talented women while serving as an inspiration for future women leaders. The 2012 CEW Achievers were:
- Jill Belasco, Founder and CEO, CoScentrix:
When her company suddenly filed for bankruptcy, she was without a job for the first time in her life. From there, she decided to become a beauty entrepreneur and never looked back. Jill said, “entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart.” She has 3 tips: 1) Make sure starting your own business is what you want to do. 2) Be sure to have a plan. 3) Form a network of people that can help you out every step of the way.
- Laurie Black, Executive Vice President, General Merchandising Manager, Cosmetics, Nordstrom
Laurie recommended “going through doors that are opened to you.” Take chances and step out of your comfort zone and rather than always rushing to make a decision, do your research, get opinions and buy-in from others.
- Alina Roytberg, Co-President and Co-Founder, Fresh
While working as a fashion designer, her company filed for bankruptcy and she was left without a job. She then got an opportunity to start the Fresh brand with her friend. Alina’s tips are to stay true to who you are; develop a personal mantra and lead by example.
In addition, Laurice Rahmé, President and Founder, Bond No. 9 New York, received CEW’s Great Idea Award for Fragrance Innovation, which recognizes a woman who has made an impact in the perfume industry by creating a new product category, satisfying unmet consumer needs or cultivating an untapped market. The award was sponsored by International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.
After 9/11, Laurice felt that NYC no longer smelled the same. With her brand, her mission was to capture the unique and beautiful scent that captures the essence of NYC. Her mentor gave her the best advice, “alway focus on creativity and the rest will follow.”
CEW honored L’Oréal USA with the Corporate Empowerment for Women Award as a company that has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the advancement of women.
“This event is unique because it is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the success of women in the beauty industry. The achievements of these remarkable female leaders and role models are so inspirational to the entire beauty community,” said CEW President, Carlotta Jacobson. “This year we are thrilled to also recognize L’Oreal USA for its dedication to helping women advance.”
