(Giveaways): The Best Anti-Acne Treatments, Products for 2012,13 – Product Reviews

18 January 2011 89 Comments

Anyone who has the tendency to breakout knows how emotionally jarring it is to face your face in the mirror daily. UGH! We turned to top tier dermatologist experts for some solid advice to solving any weather-related complexion imperfections.

WHY ME? The good news is, it isn’t just you. Unfortunately, breakouts are something that affects all types of skin. Although most anti-acne products are targeted for oily skin, acne is actually based on a combination of genetics, stress and the environment itself. Dr. Kathy Fields, Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at U.C. San Francisco and co-founder of Proactiv Solution and Rodan + Fields Dermatology, recommends following a basic guideline when treating aggravating acne:

Unclog pores: to prevent dead cells from clogging pores, they must be kept from clumping together. Additionally, the plug that begins to develop when oils and cells mix together must be broken down or prevented altogether. This requires delivering the right ingredients deep into pores. Salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, retinoids, and sulfur are ingredients capable of disrupting the plug forming union of cells and oil to keep pores clear.
Kill bacteria: Benzoyl peroxide is my preferred antibacterial agent for long-term control of acne. We recommend using benzoyl peroxide at 2.5%, the lowest clinically effective concentration. Medical studies demonstrate that a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide product is equally as effective in removing the P. acnes bacteria as a 10% product, with less potential irritation.
Treat inflammation: While unclogging pores and killing bacteria will keep new bacteria from forming, the most immediate improvement in acne comes from treating the swelling or inflammation. This will help reduce redness as well. Sulfur is commonly used for its anti-inflammatory benefits.

CLEANSE

Bubbles might be fun, but they are just no good when it comes to winter skincare. According to skincare advocate Dr. Brooke Jackson, when cleansers show bubbles or your skin “squeaks,” it is due to a high PH level which strips the skin of vital essential oils and natural moisture. Look for gentle, non-foaming face washes to treat and prevent breakouts while not stripping skin of vital moisture.

BLEMISH REGIMEN FOR ACNE GIVEAWAY

New from the experts behind ProActiv, UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfer Wash is a dermatologist developed, medicated cleanser that penetrates deep down to heal blemishes and breakouts from the inside out with the aid of sulfur (heaven sent!).

[We are giving away one complete UNBLEMISH Regimen for Acne and Post-Acne Marks to one lucky reader]

Clean and Clear Deep Action Cream Cleanser

Clean and Clear Deep Action Cream Cleanser penetrates deep into pores with its oil free formula, specifically designed to remove the dirt of the day. The gentle cleanser leaves skin soft, refreshed and gently cleansed with a cool minty after-effect.

Clarisesa Starter Kit FOR GIVEAWAY

With the added benefit of thousands of Vitamin E microbead milicapsuls, Clarisea Purifying Scrub sweeps away dirt and dead skin cells with salicylic acid to prevent bacteria. Plus—improvements can be seen right away.
[Clarisea will give away one Starter Set to a lucky winner]

TONE
Use an astringent toner to remove any dirt and oil that your cleanser didn’t take care of. Dr. Schultz recommends using an astringent marked for oily or acne-prone skin after cleansing and apply toner with a thin, cotton makeup pad. Gently wipe down your entire face to get rid of any left-over nastiness.

Perricone MD Skin Clear Acne Toner
Perricone MD Skin Clear Toner is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and medicates skin with salicylic acid to gently exfoliate without over-drying. The added bonus of consistent use? A minimized appearance of fine lines and a reduction of pore size—beautiful!

Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Stress Control Toner

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple-Action Toner stops acne before it even can begin with salicylic acid, MicroClear Technology, coating skin with soothing ingredients to reduce redness and irritation while unclogging pores.

Darphin Purifying Toner

A natural alternative Darphin Purifying Toner reduces irritation and calms skin all the while controlling oil with its formula of supremely gentle plant-based extracts.
MOISTURIZE & PROTECT

Due to a sudden drop of humidity in the air, the winter can be an incredibly drying time for skin—leaving it thirsty, sensitive and exposed. The flakey feel of parched skin can be painful, annoying and devastating but it can also be avoided. And just because the weather is cold, don’t fool yourself into thinking the sun’s rays aren’t harmful! Look for products that are water-based, oil-free and have an added SPF for protection against the harsh winter sun.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 25

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 15 gives skin a healthy dose of much needed moisture and even contains natural light diffusers to improve skin’s tone and texture—radiance, right away!

B. Kamins BIO MAPLE Matte Moisturizer SPF 15

Lightweight B. Kamins Matte Moisturizer SPF 15 leaves skin feeling fresh and smooth while eliminating shine. It’s the perfect primer for oil-free makeup too.

[B. Kamins is offering 10% off to BeautyStat readers for a week with the code bstat10]

Purpose Dual Treatment Moisture Lotion SPF 15

PURPOSE Dual Treatment Moisturizer with SPF 15 goes on as gentle as water itself and protects skin from harmful UV rays while delivering lightweight moisture.

TREAT
To complete any long-term skincare routine, steer clear of spot treatments, as they will only act as a band aide for acne but not treat the problem long term. To bid acne adieu for good, skip the quick fix and look for powerfully effective treatments to use daily.

Rodan + FIelds UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment is a powerful, deep pore treatment to calm and sooth irritated, acne prone skin.

Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Eliminating Spot Gel
Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Eliminating Spot Gel eliminates acne emergencies quickly with 2% Salicylic Acid and Neutrogena’s own powerful MicroClear® technology to deeply penetrate skin and treat at the source.

click R Vanishing Mist

click R Vanishing Mist is a powerful breakout banisher that soothes irritation, calms breakouts and reaches deep into pores to restore moisture.

A few last things to keep in mind when changing up your routine:

Consistency is key when you revamp your routine. Dr. Monia Halem, a dermatological surgeon specializing in laser and cosmetic surgery from ColumbiaDoctors Eastside, says the most important thing you can do for your skin in the New Year is get it into a great routine and be consistent! But keep in mind that just because a product works for your sister, it doesn’t mean it will work for you.

Give it time. In today’s fast paced society, we all want instantaneous results but, as the old saying goes, patience is a virtue—especially when it comes to skincare. Skincare advocate, Dr. Jackson recommends giving a product six to eight weeks to begin to show signs of improvement. Whenever you change your normal products, it takes time to readjust and—remember—when anti-acne products work, they bring everything to the surface so that means many times skin gets worse before it gets clear.

It’s never hopeless. If all else fails—head to a dermatologist to get your skin properly diagnosed. This is especially a worry in the dry winter months, when all skin seems sensitive. Dr. Hilary Baldwin, MD, Vice Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Dermatology, State University of New York – Downstate, and president of the American Acne and Rosacea Society said a common mistake many people face is misdiagnosing their own skin types. Sometimes the side effects of a supremely sensitive skin can look like acne, but when you are dealing with rosacea, it is a different ball game entirely. If your new routine doesn’t seem like it is working or is causing a different issue, head directly do a professional.

I never thought that at my age I would still be breaking out but I do! Especially around the chin area. I don’t particularly use a specific product to treat my mild acne. I use so many and they either don’t work or just takes to long for me! Thanks for the information!

I would be so happy if I won this. I’m 17 and acne is just a really annoying issue for me especially because I’m an aspiring actress and I need to have clearer skin. • Mary said:

I had clear skin all through High School. My friends were always ‘daming’ me to have acne but it just never happened. Parents commented on my beautiful skin. But then, I hit 19 and the Acne poured down on me! I have been battling Acne now for 6 years. I now take some medication for it and am scared to go off in fear that it will come back with vengeance! My face has a lot of red acne scars that I can’t wait for them to fade. I hope some of these products can help me do the trick!

  • Carrie said:

I have combination skin, dry on T-zone and oily on forehead and cheeks. Most cleansers are harsh to me because I have really sensitive skin. I’m looking for something that exfoliates and moisturizes my skin. So thank you for the info and chance to win.

  • Debbie said:

Hey! So my skin is also what I guess you would call combination, but it also changes with the weather. In the summer – oily, in the winter – dry. I have always had to have two different make-up bags – one for winter and one for summer. The transition period is what wreaks havoc on my face! Thanks so much for listening ha.

  • Juanita said:

My daughter would love me if I won this for her. I’m 41 and way over getting pimples but my daughter, at 15, is in the midst of it.

  • shel said:

My skin always seems to look worse in winter…I think the combination of dry air and my naturally prone to breakouts skin is a bad combination. I thought it would get better as I aged but it’s actually gotten worse after 30.

  • Awiii said:

I am 27 and I struggle with breakouts. It is actually worse now than when I was a teen, especially around my period. I break out on my forehead, around my chin, and the top of my chest. I get so frustrated with my acne. Thank you for the additional information.

I have been using UNBLEMISH for 2 years on my 40-something, combination skin. I used to have just 2-3 hormonal pimples a month, but when I use UNBLEMISH every morning, I don’t break out at all. It is the BEST!!

  • Tina Kirsch said:

I am 38 years old and have suffered from mild to medium acne breakouts on and off throughout my life. I used Proactiv for a number of years with success, but it seemed to quit working after awhile and it was a bit drying. I have been using Rodan + Fields Dermatologists Unmblemish for a year and can’t believe the results. My skin looks amazing and it’s dry or oily. The toner is offered in two options, one which fades hyper-pigmentation from previous acne. Dr. Rodan and Fields have far outdone Proactiv with Unblemish.

  • Kim said:

I’m in my 30s and have tried many products over the years with little to no success. The best I’ve found recently is Clinique’s 3 step acne package, but its still doesn’t prevent 100% and doesn’t include the toner that fades pigment scaring from previous breakouts. Unblemished sounds like the full package!

  • Tiffany Spencer, Rodan and Fields Consultant said:

The Rodan and Fields Unblemish regimen SHRUNK my pores in record time WITHOUT overdrying my skin…I love it so much I’m a consultant with the company!

Me and my family struggle with acne and scaring. I try many drugstore products and homemade methods. I am currently using lush fresh farmacy face soap which is type stripping, and my family use nuetrgema. Nothing really seems to work for longer than a few weeks. Can anyone recommend a long term solution for sensitive skin and/or oily skin.

Im disabled & my skin is sensitive but had blemishes & acne in different spots. My forhead stays VERy VERY oily…but around my noses it gets dry. Also my hair comes out in more than 100 hairs & day. Scalp is oily & my ends are dry. In moisture it tends to frizz. I have RA/fibro/PsA & im anemic. I would be humbled to win. But i dont want to be selfish, bc if someone else wins, I will be happy for them & congratuate them as well.

Oh lord… so I used to only get really deep zits when I was stressed or around “that time,” but I just go through a divorce, and now I have really shallow, small pimples EVERYWHERE on my face (almost like a rash) in ADDITION to the now-more-frequent deep zits. Heeeeelp :)

I’m in my 30s and have suffered with acne in some form since I was 12 but in that time I have never found anything that is really effective for me. I know that my acne is genetic which makes it hard to beat since there are no particular triggers like other people suffer so simply cutting out certain foods or cutting back the stress doesn’t help so I am always on the lookout for miracle products that might just help. At the moment I concentrate more on the overall condition of my skin than the actual pimples as I figure one day I’ll have to grow out of it, maybe…. I hope.

Try as I may, I cannot escape getting blackheads on the sides of my nose, and to a lesser extent, on my forehead. I hate that at 40 I still break out. I have dry sensitive skin so I have to be careful what I use. There’s nothing like trying to put makeup and cover up on flaky skin. Sometimes I love to treat my skin to a nice facial but most of the time I have little time to take care of myself so every minute counts.

  • Maria Mejia said:

I have struggled with hormonal acne since 22 years of age. I just turned 30 and I still have MAJOR issues with it. I also have scars to go along with it. I am currently on the Pill and trying to maintain a good skin care regimen but I also notice that sleep and diet are a major contributor to my skin problems. Dairy and gluten (bread) exacerbate the problem as also does a lack of sleep. If I watch what I eat, exercise and have sufficient sleep then the problem dies down for a bit. If I screw up even a little then I have hell to pay for later. The acne problem has over taken my life!!!! I hate it to death!

I have spent at least 3 years trying to find my perfect skin care regimen. I don’t have bad acne but trying to control the times I do have it as well having to care for the special areas of face affected by seborrheic dermatitis is a real problem. Since I have combination, sensitive skin, it is so hard to find the right products. I would be so grateful if I could win any of the products in this giveaway.

We have tried everything (and I do mean everything!) for her acne. OTC, prescriptions from the dermatologist, homemade recipes, etc.
and her acne just resists all of it. She gets large painful blemishes that always leave a purple scar. I feel so bad for her, she’s at that age where looks are everything to a teenager.

However, now in my early thirties I am being attacked by acne around my chin and nose area. I’m not sure why. It seems my current regimen is working well for what its intent is but I still need something for acne. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

Let’s see..I am often very insecure to leave because of my incredibly blotchy, red skin. it is sensitive but oily as a dickens, breaks out and gets flaky dry in some areas too!
IDK what to use half the time. I have to scrub to get rid of flakes, moisturize to re hydrate where I scrubbed, use acne meds in the oily area, etc.etc.
I use like 4 diff items! Not to mention large pores too :(
I would be eternally grateful for anything on this page..Thank you :)
