.. First, let’s get real for a minute: Chemical straighteners always do some damage to your hair. Always. Even if the straighteners are better than they used to be. To say otherwise, well it’s like convincing yourself that because McDonald’s stopped making its French fries with trans fats, the fries are suddenly good for you. They are not. Now that we’ve cleared that up, here’s how the straighteners work: Certain chemical compounds raise the pH level of hair, lifting the cuticle and breaking apart molecular bonds called disulfides. This process allows the hair to be reshaped, i.e. straightened.
