The hairstyle may be the focal point of any look, but many disregard the importance of the hair part. Whether you are disguising an unwanted feature or creating an impromptu style, a part can mean the world to some and nothing to others. But, here at BeautyStat, we take the part seriously. Read on to see which type of part works best for you face shape!
The best thing to know about a hair part is how to place that divide in order to flatter your face shape. And in regards to ‘flatter’ meaning to downplay the unwanted features that symmetry and evolution deem unsightly. The first step is to understand your face shape. There are four basic face shapes that most people fall into: heart, square, oval and round. Once you know your face shape you can begin to decipher where to part your hair.
A heart-shaped face has more width on the top and is rather slim down towards the bottom, like Reese Witherspoon or Jennifer Aniston. With a heart-shaped face the center part is the ideal look. This will hide the widest part of your face, which is often the cheeks, and downplay a prominent chin. The best thing you can do with a heart-shaped face is avoid any cut that brings attention to your cheeks.

The most flattering part for an oval or oblong face shape is the side part, but, overall, this shape can handle most parts. Side parts help to breakup the length and add some width to the oftentimes slim faces, but celebrities like Megan Fox (also pictured above) and Sarah Jessica Parker also look stunning with a middle part. If you have a square- or round-shaped face the best part is a side part that leaves less hair on your “good” side. This will help soften the features and help slim the width of your face. Keira Knightley and Angelina Jolie are great examples.
The most important thing to remember with a part is that the rules are meant to be broken: experiment, because in the end, a part is never permanent and is really just a type of style to achieve.
