GIVEAWAY, Review, Ingredients, Shades: John Frieda Precision Hair Colour Foam

2 December 2012 22 Comments
We recessionistas are always looking for more ways to do our beauty upkeep at home, right? From manicures to pedicures, and especially hair coloring — as this can be quite a pricey proposition if you add up all the touch-ups and maintenance visits to the salon.
We’ve reviewed all types of hair color products on the market from Clairol Advanced Grey Solution to the very popular L’Oreal Sublime Hair Color Mousse.
Review, Shades: John Frieda Precision Hair Colour Foam
Enter a new form of hair color from John Frieda, Precision Color Foam.  This product claims to be a groundbreaking, non-drip foam formula that spreads easily into your roots and those hard-to-reach places for exact, all-over 100% grey coverage.  This results in salon-precise professional coverage for flawless, natural looking color results in the comfort of your own home.
Review, Shades: John Frieda Precision Hair Colour Foam
Can this really be true? Does the fact that this formula is a non-drip foam formula actually give you salon results?
We reached out to hair color expert, Helen of  www.klassicsinternational.com to give her perspective on this.  She says that during application, consumers may make “overlapping mistakes” and that “not knowing how much is too much can cause damage to the health of the hair.” To prevent this, she recommends that you ”get help with the application process from a friend – having the help of someone during the parting process and corresponding application process will maximize the outcome of the at-home color process.”

We do like the fact that this product has a conditioning step that helps to condition the hair. The product contains Orbignya Oleifera Oil and Oryza Sativa Bran Oil (aka Rice Bran oil).  They are both natural oils that are rich in fatty acids that can help nourish and hydrate the hair. And it contains Quaternium-91, an ingredient that helps to soften, condition and add shine.

For last minute hair color tips, we asked expert Toni Love of ToniLove.com to help us.  She says “be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions BEFORE applying hair color.  And always use gloves and a base cream to protect the skin.”

I tried the John Frieda Foam. I have rheumatoid arthritis. The foam bottle was very easy to use. It took minimal effort to squeeze and apply to my hair. I then tried the Loreal Foam. Loreal was horrible. I had great difficulty squeezing the foam out and it left my hair feeling like straw. Not only did my hand hurt, my hair now looks like straw, but it did not cover the gray. I am going back-and staying with-John Frieda Foam.

I used the golden blonde precision foam, I was worried because I had VERY dark roots and champagne blonde hair. I was pleasantly surprised when the color didn’t have any kind of green tint (which usually happens to me when I go shades darker). My hair simply looked more natural and was VERY shiny and smooth. I’m looking forward to trying it again.

I also tried the new John Frieda mousse, light golden brown and it came out OMG very very dark brown. One week later, it’s lightened up a little and I’m happy with it. Have written to JF asking how to correct this as I followed the directions (perhaps shorten the time significantly?) My advice is to go a shade lighter than what you want to end up with.

I was using Lo real hair color, then twice I tried John Freda, I notice It didn’t cover the gray for a long time, maximum 2 weeks and all the grey came back, and it made my hair very tangled and like a straw I am going back to Lo real excellent hair color, I use the dark brown and I only shampoo my hair twice a week , even after the coloring i don’t put the shampoo on only the condition so I well not loss the color. I am a very disappointing customer , I like the foam Idea but not the company.

  • Mona said:

I am very sorry but disappointed customer with the foam hair color, it makes my hair dry and tangled, I was using L’Oreal but now i tried John Freda and I am going back to L’Oreal sorry. Bad experience , the color does not last more then 2 weeks or three weeks max. I use the dark brown sense my hair is brown, but then the grey comes back so fast.

    Thank you

    Mona

I tried John Frieda 6N…boy,it came out way too dark. I am natural light brown and it was VERY dark. Disappo9inted and trying to see if I just let it go or try to fix it with Color Oops.

My hair has been salon colored with Matrix for many years but I recently had surgery and decided to cover my very resistant grays at home with the help of a family member. The John Frieda Foam Colour was easy to apply and while my hair thankfully ended up soft and manageable with all my grays covered, I am shocked at how dark the final color turned out to be.I used 6G and my hair is now much darker than my starting color. I am now wondering how to correct this at my next color.

i have naturally dark brown hair and i used the john frieda 5G medium golden brown. omg my hair looked more like the cherry red when it was done. i will never use this product again

  • mary said:

I did find the product easy to use – have never tried coloring my hair before. But it came out much darker, and a shade more red, than I expected. I am a natural medium-dark blonde and was using the dye to cover my grey hairs; I used the shade labelled dark golden brown and, on me, it came out closer to a light chestnut. On the other hand, the conditioner works very well and my hair seems full and smooth. Not really happy with the color, though. I’d been greying rather nicely and may not try to color my hair again.

  • mary said:

Oh – above, I meant dark golden blonde, not golden brown!

  • Karen said:

I used 5G medium Golden brown on my already light to dark brown hair. It turned plum color. Don’t know what went wrong. Followed the directions to the T. The foam was easy to apply but even had a purple color to it will applying it. Maybe I didn’t leave it on my hair long enough.

I’m sorry I didn’t see this site before I used my free coupon for this hair color. I have always used Clairol with no problem, but decided to try this as it was free and a good name. HORRIBLE MISTAKE!!!! I used the medium golden brown, and it came out almost burgundy!!! I went and bought Suave clarifying shampoo and washed it twice a day for about 4 days just to lower the color. It still was bad, but now it’s been over a month, and with daily washings using the suave once a week, I re-colored with Clairol’s natural instincts, and will NEVER use any other brand again!

  • Donna said:

I’ve been coloring at home for years and decided to give John Frieda Foam a try. HUGE MISTAKE. So much for no dripping. I used the amount recommended and had foam dripping everywhere. Ended up having to stand in the shower as I dripped waiting for the time to pass. Left it on for almost 10 minutes less than recommended. I used 5G which should have been a Golden Brown. I now have very, very dark color that is RED. What the heck happened?

Top it off with the stripes the dripping color left all over my face and neck and I am not a happy customer.

I’ll NEVER purchase this or any John Frieda again.

Easy to use the foam but I also wish I’d seen this site.
Came out way to dark. Now having to explain to co-workers
who think I’m going for the kardachian look.

i used this product for a very risky bright blonde but to my surprise it worked a treat! have used other brands since and wish i hadn’t bothered, my colour has stayed my hair seemed to benefit from it and i was happy with the result what more can you ask for!

  • Liz said:

I used the 9A color. My hair was very dry and tangled at the ends and this was the first time dying my hair too. It made my dark blonde hair more healthy, shiny, soft, and it looks and feels way better than before. It made my roots look more blonde and I am very happy with the results! It is not exactly the color that it says on the box, not as light, but it is close. Very impressed. Definately going to stick with the John Frieda hair color foam and maybe use 10B to make a highlighted effect. Love it!

I used Revlon Colorsilk in Pale Beige Blond for years and Revlon discontinued the color (which Revlon does a lot- discontinue things). I could not find anything close until I found the color in John Frieda. So I tried it this afternoon. My hair is still wet but it looks like it did a good job. But the jury is still out!! If this brand doesn’t work, I’ll try L’Oreal because I think they have a “beige blond” color.

Also, note to all those whose hair turned reddish – that means you have a lot of red pigment in your hair. I’ve been coloring my hair for 30 years and do not use Clairol at all because it brings out the red in my hair. That is why I loved Revlon. The colors were true. Also, always use a shampoo formulated for color treated hair, especially blond colors. It will keep the brassiness to a minimum.

So I normally get highlights at a salon, never done any at home but being really broke and I got a free coupon so i figured why not . I have fairly dirty blonde hair so I used 8N cuz i didn’t wanna go super light and stay kinda natural. The product itself is great to use, even though the smell knocked me out at first! Even in a bathroom with an open window and normal light fan. The foam does not drip at all (they say it won’t foam if you only tilt 5 times, it drips if you shake or mix more) comes out great and workable and rinses out well. The conditioner is great too, nice healthy hair after i dried it out. Only thing is my hair has a slight reddish strawberry blonde tinge to it on my roots, and the rest looks like the box color on the front. I’, guessing this is because I have a fair amount of red in my hair and it brought it out. I only did this last night so i’m hoping it will lighten with washing and some sun and highlight heat treatments. Coulda been worse but if you have natural red in your hair i’d go the extra 10 min for roots for a full 30min, cuz i did 20 for all over color.Very good product though in my book

  • Miranda said:

let me clarify, they say it WILL FOAM GREAT if you only tilt 5 times and DON”T shake. i did that and worked great. If you let it sit it won’t foam too btw.
