Review, Before/After Photos, Ingredients: Cezanne System - Keratin Treatment For Safe, Formaldehyde-Free Hair Straightening

The Brazilian Blowout controversy rages on as California lawmakers demand that the manufacturers of the Brazilian Blowout and Acai Professional Smoothing Solution, GIB LCC, put warning labels on their packaging.

We covered the Brazilian Blowout dispute back in 2010, when word got out that a stylist in Oregon claimed that they experienced difficulty breathing, eye irritation and nose bleeds when applying the Brazilian Blowout products which consist of 8-10% formaldehyde (a carcinogen), according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

With all of this going on, it’s comforting to know that those of us with frizzy hair have a safe alternative. One such treatment is the new (pronounced say-zan) Cezanne™ System — a transformational, long-lasting and safe smoothing treatment that primes hair to its ideal, most beautiful condition without the damaging or dangerous chemicals found in other straightening and smoothing products.

Cezanne uses sodium sulfite, a preservative used in red wine and crackers, along with a proprietary blend of premium ingredients, exotic oils and high-quality natural keratin proteins. These components work together in combination over the course of a three-step process to deliver stronger, healthier, more manageable and exquisitely beautiful hair.

The Cezanne™ System:

• Reshapes the structure of the hair to create smoother hair with less frizz

• Makes hair smoother and more manageable, so you have more styling options. Easily create a pin-straight and sleek look, then change to bombshell curls and back again, whenever desired

• Includes formulations and treatment regimens for all hair types

• Allows hair to be immediately styled or colored after treatment — no waiting for days without washing, styling or coloring like with other keratin treatments

• Does not wash out. Regrowth can be treated as the hair grows out to keep hair looking beautiful longer

• Safe for stylists and clients and can be applied without gloves or masks. Cezanne contains no damaging or dangerous chemicals, irritating fumes, formaldehyde or other aldehydes, ammonium thioglycolate, sodium hydroxide (lye) or guanidine carbonate (“no-lye”)

• Contains the maximum amount of keratin that the average person’s hair can absorb, so hair is left healthier, stronger and shinier

How It Works

Cezanne is a smoothing system that performs like a keratin treatment, which softens curls and reduces frizz, but grows out like a mild relaxer with no line of demarcation, resulting in manageable hair that can be worn straight, curly or anywhere in between.

Cezanne does not use harsh chemicals or toxins, lasts longer and allows for more styling options than other smoothing and straightening treatments. Cezanne uses sodium sulfite to safely and gently shuffle the disulfide bonds of the hair, allowing for a fundamental change in the structure of the hair.

Hair is left with a softer, more natural curl than a formaldehyde treatment provides, while keeping the body and volume of the hair intact. And unlike formaldehyde treatments, hair is able to hold a curl if desired or can be styled straight with a flat iron. The effects won’t wash out, and the new curl pattern will remain in place as the hair grows; new growth will have the original curl pattern, so touch-ups will be needed.

Cezanne works differently than any other treatment on the market now:

• Unlike smoothing formaldehyde treatments or lye- and no-lye-based relaxers, Cezanne reshapes the hair without toxic chemicals and actually strengthens hair while it is restructured

• Unlike permanent treatments like Japanese hair straighteners, no caustic or harsh chemicals are used in Cezanne, and you aren’t limited to just pin-straight hair

• Unlike keratin treatments that must be applied under very high heat, Cezanne only requires moderate heat, which limits the damage to the hair

The Cezanne™ System: Three Simple Steps:

Step No. 1

Cezanne Clarifying Shampoo — Removes oil and build-up to prime the hair for treatment. The Clarifying Shampoo works on all hair types and is paraben-free.

Key ingredients include: Water (aqua), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (salt), Cocamide DEA (coconut oil), Cocamidopropyl Betaine (synthetic), Sodium Chloride (salt), Propylene Glycol (alcohol), Glucose (sugar), Glucose Oxidase, Lactoperoxidase (protein), Glycerin (vegetable), Fragrance (plant), Propanediol (alcohol), Cynara Scolymus (artichoke) Leaf Extract (plant)

Step No. 2

Cezanne Restructuring Gel — Gently and safely shuffles the disulfide bonds with a key ingredient, sodium sulfite, which reduces the hair’s natural wave and curl. The disulfide bonds are then stretched with a flat iron. After this step, the proteins in the hair begin to build new disulfide “bridges” to lock in the new shape.

Key ingredients include: Water (aqua), Sodium Sulfate (inorganic salt), Citric Acid (synthetic), Hydroxyethylcellulose (plant, mineral, water), Glucose (sugar), Glucose Oxidase, Lactoperoxidase (protein), Mannitol (hexahydric alcohol), Keratin (protein), Hydrolyzed Keratin (protein), Fragrance (plant)

Step No. 3

Cezanne Conditioning Keratin Masque — Reduces frizz, increases manageability and seals in the treatment’s effects. The Conditioning Keratin Masque hydrates and invigorates hair cuticles with natural keratin and an exclusive blend of long-strand premium proteins, nourishing the hair while the new bridges solidify.

Key ingredients in Level One and Level Two: Water (aqua), Cetyl Alcohol (alcohol), Behentrimonium Methosulfate (rapeseed oil), Cetearyl Alcohol (alcohol), Dicetyldimonium Chloride (salt), Quaternium-31 (synthetic), Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride (salt), Keratin (protein), Hydrolyzed Keratin (protein), Ceteareth-20 (alcohol), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (plant), Glucose (sugar), Glucose Oxidase (enzyme), Lactoperoxidase (protein), Glycerin (vegetable), Hydrolyzed Ceratonia Siliqua Seed Extract (plant), Zea Mays Starch (corn starch), Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (guar gum conditioner), Polyquaternium-7 (synthetic), Fragrance (plant), Hydroxyethylcellulose (plant, mineral, water), Myristyl Myristate (vegetable ester), Amodimethicone (synthetic), Trideceth-12 (synthetic), Cetrimonium Chloride (salt), Porphyra Umbilicalis Extract (plant), Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum (plant), Pentylene Glycol (synthetic), Rhodiola Rosea Root Extract (plant), Hydrolyzed Soy Protein (vegetable protein), PEG-150 Distearate (acid)

Cosmetic Chemist Assessment:

I was fortunate enough to witness a few consumers (diverse group some Caucasian, Black, etc.) with different hair types — having this treatment done in a salon setting. Compared to other keratin treatments that I’ve seen, this process was quicker and easier.

The women that had the treatment were able to have their hair styled to their desire (some chose pin-straight, others chose more textured waves). I interviewed each of them and they all confirmed that they were thrilled with the results and preferred the Cezanne treatment over other keratin smoothing treatments they had in the past.

I also reviewed the independent test results that show the Cezanne hair-smoothing benefits, which last up to 5 months and is 100% formaldehyde-free.
