Review, Before And After Photos: Redken Shape Control Hair Smoothing Salon Treatment

3 February 2012 11 Comments

The Brazilian Blowout controversy rages on as California lawmakers demand that the manufacturers of the Brazilian Blowout and Acai Professional Smoothing Solution, GIB LCC, put warning labels on their packaging.

We covered the Brazilian Blowout dispute back in 2010, when word got out that a stylist in Oregon claimed that they experienced difficulty breathing, eye irritation and nose bleeds when applying the Brazilian Blowout products which consist of 8-10% formaldehyde (a carcinogen), according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

With all of this going on, it’s comforting to know that those of us with frizzy hair have a safe alternative. One such treatment is the new Redken Shape Control.

Shape Control provides benefits to the consumer such as reduced styling time/improved manageability, reduction/elimination of frizz, and increased shine, softness and condition of the hair.  The new texture range features Kera-Shape Complex technology that contains shaping agents for permanent smoothing or curling, cationic conditioners for moisture and shine and emollients for control and manageability. Shape Control is ideal for consumers who want the end result of long-lasting waves, curls, smooth or straight styles without compromising their health and condition of their hair.Shape Control offers three permanent style-transforming techniques:
TECHNIQUE   BENEFITS
Urban Curls
  • Thermally reconditions – hair feels softer, smoother, and shinier
  • Stylists can customize curl pattern [with curling iron] by placing and shaping curls based on client’s needs/hair type
  • Frizz control

  • Smoothes out frizz

  • Straightens hair [with straightening iron]
  • Provides volume and frizz control, even at high humidity levels
  • Thermally reconditions – hair feels softer, smoother, and shinier

SCIENTIFIC ASSESSMENT: This treatment is indeed formaldehyde-free. It contains Ammonium Thioglycolate, Ethanolamine Thioglycolate and Ammonium Hydroxide. These ingredients work together to permanently break the hair bonds in order to help smooth and straighten the hair. This will certainly perform well but may cause more damage to hair than other types of salon hair smoothing formulas on the market.

Hate it! I am so disappointed. I took this class with several stylists at my salon and we were so excited to offer this new service. The process takes nearly 4 1/2hrs. Most of which is time that the client will spend under the dryer. For long thick hair where the client is looking for loose curls or waves it takes almost 2hrs under a dryer and even then the ends are still slightly damp. They looked AMAZING when the clients left the salon. I was blown away and my clients were super excited. Then when they came back 3days later for a shampoo and styling lesson…nothing. Not even a slight wave. I was mortified! All I could do was damage control. I refunded SIX guests and offered them complimentary conditioning treatments. I have a very busy, successful salon and I feel like my reputation has been tarnished. When I called the hotline for assitance and verified that I had done everything correctly, I was basically told that I set my clients up for disappointment by having unrealistic expectations and that it would take time to become proficient at the service. Really Redken? I don’t think expecting a loose wave(similar to the one in the picture above) is unreasonable and when the guest comes back with straight hair after 3days the only ones being unreasonable are the folks over at Redken. I plan on switching all of my product to a company other than Redken. Between the classes, products, services, stylist wages, and returned home haircare products this “money making” service cost me nearly $2500. Save yourself the headache and the money.

I had this service done at a salon that I have been going to for years. I have very thick, long curly hair and it takes a lot of time to straighten so I decided to get this services done because I usually wear my hair straight and wanted to save time styling my hair.

I would have to say my hair is very healthy and is my favorite attribute. After I washed my hair for the fist time after getting this service done I was mortified. This product has definitely changed my hair!!!! It is a total frizz ball. My hair does not even look real. After spending over an hour trying to straighten my hair with a straightener is is still extremely frizzy!! N oohing I do works!!! The best way to describe my hair now is “I LOOK LIKE A WITCH”!!!!!!

The straightener won’t even straighten my hair. I am more than pissed to have spent this kind of time (5hours) and money to have results like this. I have great hair and now it is totally damaged!!! I expect REDKIN to do something. If you are thinking of getting the service done DON’T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I want the CURLS. I have stick straight, thick hair…suggestions, other than the dreaded perm? Anybody have any ideas on what products, please let me know sweepingnews(at)gmail(dot)com
I will be happy for the day they make a shampoo that instantly makes hair like the pic of the brunette’s!

Who. cares if it takes a long time. People are getting the best possible service with the top notch product line. They should be aware thAT it won’t be quick and painless… Afterall, they are altering the natural growth pattern.

I used the Urban Curl system on medium length straight hair. before trying the system i watched the tutorial and studied the instructions to be sure i had it down. Ive done multiple types of straighteners and perms before so Im no stranger to the process.
It took me FOUR hours to do and in the end, as Cvrgrl78 said, there was no curl to be found after washing the first time(after 48 hours).
    Very disappointed.

Lindsay, it’s not about the length of time of the treatment, it’s the fact that the urban curl service does not work. I went to my salon and had this service done, I was their first client for this service. I have shoulder length hair, the process took four hours which I was warned about so I was prepared for the time. The immediate result was beautiful pincurls. The salon styled me, and I went to work on an overnight shift. By the next morning, half of my curls had become straight. They said if this happened I could recurl it with a ceramic curler, which I did. When I woke up for work the next night, it was even straighter, so I recurled it again. By the next morning, it was once again straight so I recurled it yet AGAIN before I arrived at the salon to have my hair washed and styled. Once the stylist was done with the shampoo and styling, my hair wouldn’t even hold a curl. I felt worse for the stylist and the salon because they were so embarrassed. They refunded my money and gave me a free Redken conditioning treatment because the chemicals from the urban curl service had damaged my hair. Now, even with a curling iron my hair doesn’t hold a curl. When I scrunch and blow dry with a diffuser it becomes kinky, not curly. I’m sorry, but this service does not work, I would not recommend it.

I am a firm believer in Redken and they wouldn’t launch a product that they wouldn’t back 100%! On the comment from (cvrgrl78) the drying time under the dryer couldve been the cause of your 4 1/2 processing time.In the Redken class we had to dry the hair with a blow dryer and then curl the hair with a ceramic iron, roll in pin curls or on sponge rollers and then neutralize. You coulve saved yourself ALOT of time. And to add the (Vanesa) when you had your service done did they curl your hair with a ceramic tool before they applied the neutralizer? Because curling the hair after the service has already been completed won’t change a thing.

After reading the reviews it sounds like maybe this intense chemical service hasn’t been performed correctly! And that might be why some people are unhappy!

I had this treatment done February 7 of this year. I have never been so thrilled with a treatment before. I’ve had Keratin treatments before that couldn’t compare with this treatment. My hair has movement and shine. Almost 4 months later it still is straight except for the new growth which you don’t even notice. I can’t believe how much I love my hair. I’ve forgotten what it’s like to have a bad hair day and stress over the frizz! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Redkin. I Love It!!!!

I had the urban curls service completed and it completely destroyed the top layer of my hair!!! It took 6 hours only to provide a rats nest of nasty frizz!!! It burned off 4 inches of my hair! I have never had such a bad experience! Stick to keratin treatments and Avoid this-
