BeautyStat: What inspires you? How did you first decide you wanted to embrace the world of hair?
Ken Paves: “I realized that making a woman feel great about herself also made me feel great about myself. I feel that the end result, the look, is not my value but our true value to one another is caring for, encouraging, and loving each other.”
BeautyStat: How has your partnership been with Jessica Simpson?
KP “It’s been wonderful – we’re best of friends so everything comes together naturally, and effortlessly! We collaborated on each and every style that is in the hairdo collection. All the styles are based on our favorite looks we have created over the years, and also what we have been told that women like most. I designed hairdo to be incredibly modern. That meant there would be a casual elegance to hair, while adding volume and texture. ‘Sexy’ hair is always in, but today’s sexy hair is beautiful and natural, each hairdo piece was designed with this in mind. Some pieces are made of 100% human hair, and others are made of Tru2Life (which can be heat-style up to 350 degrees.) They are designed to be used over and over again and are available in both straight and wavy styles.”
BeautyStat: How is Operation Smile? How have you been involved in this?
Ken Paves: “Operation Smile has long been one of the major philanthropic forces that have impacted my life and the lives of so many others. Operation Smile’s medical volunteer teams have spent tireless weeks (more recently) in Haiti performing life-saving surgeries on people who have nowhere else to turn. We often take for granted the resources that we have in this country. I thank God that Operation Smile’s teams are still in Haiti as we speak, helping people regain their lives by mending their bodies. I’ve been involved with Operation Smile for over 7 years. It is an organization close to my heart as my nephew Ryan was born with a cleft and died as an infant.
My niece Caitlyn and I went on an Operation Smile mission to Honduras where we saw firsthand kids’ lives change as they were given new smiles – it was a moving experience for us.”
BeautyStat: Women all over the world tend to be very critical of their hair. What advice would you give them?
Ken Paves: “Use self-expression. The way we present ourselves tells the world a lot about us. Don’t tell the world you want to look like everyone else. Define a sense of beauty true to yourself, and change your hair as often as you change your mind! It should be fun.”
BeautyStat: Do you have hair envy? If so, whose hair?!
Ken Paves: “Yes! Adrian Grenier or Bradley Cooper! When it’s long and curly!! Wait, isn’t my hair like that???”

HELP! My hair literally has a mind of it’s own. At the roots it can get extremely oily, and the ends it’s dryer than brillo. I’ve been told to trim my hair every three months, but that only brings the dryness higher up on the strands. I’ve literally been scared to get a haircut in THREE YEARS! I’ve tried practically every products, even stopped using styling tools for six months. I don’t know what to do, Please help I am desperate for a fix and a haircut!!
What an awesome opportunity to ask a fabulous special guest a question!
I have naturally thick/coarse, wavy dark hair. It is just past my shoulders and I’ve had the same long layered style for many years (I graduated high school in the 80s). I have used gels, mousse, wax-type products as styling aids for years, but am not sure what the best products are to use on my hair type. I wash and condition every other day and use the above products on those days. What do you recommend for overall styling products? I prefer a “wash and go” style that requires minimal work to get out the door – I work full time and have 3 kids.
I appreciate any and all advice!
I Have curly hair and am in need of a haircut very bad because my hair is to long and the weight of my hair is weighing my curls down, my question is the salon down the street expertise is curly hair dry cutting? is it better to cut curly hair dry? I made an appointment then cancelled cause i was very unsure of the dry cut, What is your advice wet cut verses dry on curly hair also do you think slithering curly hair is right?
i would really like to know if there really is a product out there that can change my hair from frizzy to smooth.seems i’ve tried nearly every thing and nothing really works.
Hi Ken -
I’ve been coloring my hair “dark auburn” (over my natural brown turning grey) since my early 20′s, and it’s been pretty resilient, considering. But now my thick curly hair is getting really dry, and short of slathering a quart of olive oil all over my head, I’m not sure what to do. To make the problem worse, a few months back I had so much color build-up in my hair it got really dark, so I had the color stripped to reveal the much lighter auburn lurking underneath…and now that I’m coloring it again, I just can’t seem to hydrate it enough to get my soft, glossy, soft curls back.
Any product suggestions? Or do I need to cut off my over-the-shoulder length hair and start all over?
Thanks.
Laurie
Ken, great having you here! My hair is so flat…..do I need to cut it to get more height around the crown, because it’s chin length overall? Or are there products that will help give lift to the crown.
second question: what’s a good way to “up-do” an all-around chin length look that’s great for work but is kind of boring for the evening!
thanks
How in the heck am I supposed to get rid of frizzies? I have naturally curly/wavy hair and its making me crazy. I only wash it every other day (if that), and I let it air dry as much as possible since I know that I will use a curling iron eventually to tame some of it. Its a different kind of curly all over and I cant seem to keep from looking like I have a fuzzy halo around my entire head in every picture I take. I have a big family picture coming up in August and I am so sure my hair is going to ruin the picture.
Hi, I am over the age of 40 and my hair is showing it. Wonder if you can advise me on how take care of hair that is going on the dry side. I let my hair air naturaly, but it’s still dry on the ends. Any ideas? Thanks!
for the one with oil scalp and dry ends, How do you condition your hair? remember you shampoo the scalp and condition the hair, so if you are putting too much conditioner on the scalp and not on the hair that is going tobe the results, and when you do condition make sure that you feel the hair if it still feels dry, repeat. Please do cut your ends because if you have split ends that would make your ends seem more dry, hope I helped
Ken, I have fine hair. Although I love the look of my straight tresses, how can I get volume and curl without having to hairspray like there’s no tomorrow (and in return feel like helmet head – not so sexy!)?
Hi Ken,
This isn’t a wild or crazy question, but it’s something I’ve had on my mind recently: One of the times women tend to drastically change their hairstyle in a way that they normally wouldn’t is right after a rough breakup. Do you approve of this practice?
From experience, sometimes – OK, maybe most times – the results aren’t that great, so are there some things we should consider/keep in mind when making the change? Are there any hair-friendly alternatives you can recommend?
Thanks for taking the time to read this question, and I hope to read your answer soon!
I hardly ever straighten or use hot tools on my hair, yet the ends on my shorter layers are dead and frizzed. What may be causing it and what can I do to treat it?
Hi Ken,
I’ve been wearing my hair short, relaxed, & colored (on top) in a very conservative mohawk for the past 3-4 yrs. I recently started working out again supercharged. Because I’m sweating so much, I’m washing my hair every other day 2 combat my dry scalp. I need 2 change to something with less maintenence like maybe braids or sewn in extensions. Will I be able 2 do this without my dry scalp wreaking havoc on my hair?
Hello. I need HELP!!! My hair is a mess, ive dyed it a few times so now its dry, with split ends. And Im losing more hair than normal. Ive tried many products. Please Help!!
Ken,
Thanks so much for giving us the opportunity to ask questions!! I was wondering, what advice do you have for someone who is 40 and coloring their hair for the first time? Also, do you recommend any changes to someone’s hair routine as we age?
Thanks again, and it was great to read about your work with Operation Smile!!
Hello My question is for the chemically straightened hair Which is better Brazillian or Japanese? Which one leaves less damage, stays longer, and works better?
Thank you !
Hello!! My hair is super healthy… except right around my face where I HAVE HAVE HAVE to straight iron it every day unless I wear a hatheadband. Otherwise, devil’s ears come to play. Any tips on how to get the straightness around my face without massacreing it???
What are your recommended steps for shampooing? Brush hair first? Two sudsings? Leave-in or rinse-out conditioner? Cold water rinse? Air dry?
Also what do you think of pre-shampoo conditioners and overnight conditioners if my hair is already healthy, but colored? Thanks!!
