Easy, breezy, NEW! That was the tagline (and hashtag) at last night’s COVERGIRL Summer Beauty REMIX, which showcased the Summer 2013 release of 10 new products!

How cool are these COVERGIRLS?

NERVO DJed the event with their fresh beats that kept the party pumped and loaded! Fellow COVERGIRL Sofia Vergara visited each beauty station of the event, from the Smoochies Photo Shoot to the Glosstini Salon Bar. All stations highlighting each new and fantastic COVERGIRL product.

Eyes were your first stop as you entered the COVERGIRL event space at the Flamed Out Motion Makeover. The COVERGIRL Shadow Pots and Flamed Out Shadow Crayons got your eyelids ready for more color! My eyes were gilded in gold and burnt copper shades that made me feel like the Girl On Fire!

Afterwards, I was introduced to COVERGIRL’s new Ink It! liners in Charcoal Ink and Golden Ink. The pigments were incredibly rich and they glided on easily. Not to mention they did not come off! I easily fell for the gold shade, which the makeup artist used in my tear ducts and lower lash line.

She winged out my liner to accentuate the fierce gold shadows used, which guests could choose from an assortment of eyeliner looks.

The Flamed Out Mascara did just that to your lashes! The mascara wand itself goes from round at the end, to thin, then rounds out again. It grips your lashes and really helps to extend the outer corners.

It was also easy to reach my bottom lashes, and I found myself using the tip to separate as well. This is much more of a lengthening and defining mascara that really makes your lashes extend or flame outwards!

What’s an eye look without some lip color? The Lipslicks Smoochies are sheer, balm-like gloss sticks. I gravitated towards a true red shade (220 #Text Me) that applied like a stain — the perfect lip product for summer when you want a little color with a lot of moisture!

There are two new foundations from COVERGIRL, one being the brand’s very own CC Cream! I couldn’t believe it! Not only are they releasing a CC Cream but one for your eyes, too!

 The COVERGIRL + Olay CC Cream Eye Rehab is infused with pigments and Olay‘s serum to provide moisture to fight fine lines and wrinkles. It brightens the eye area all while concealing dark circles. It is rather light in texture and leaves a velvety finish on the delicate skin around the eye area.

COVERGIRL + OLAY CC Cream Tone Rehab Foundation instantly evens skintone, reducing the look of discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles. I picked shade 140 Natural Beige, which when I got home appears rather dark. But, there will be plenty of shades to choose from.

It definitely is moisturizing (more so than the COVERGIRL + Olay CC Cream Eye Rehab in my opinion) and will leave a semi-matte finish on your skin. It blends rather easily, but I found that you need to work quickly before it sinks into your skin.

There will also be a Clean Whipped Creme Foundation and Clean Glow Blusher in 100 Roses. The foundation is very airy and whipped in texture. It does provide high coverage and didn’t look heavy at all. I never used a whipped foundation before, and was surprised at how powder-like it appeared on my skin — good for the hot summer months, don’t you think?

The Clean Glow Blusher is a tricolor product. Use one, two or all three shades as you swirl the colors on your cheeks for a natural and flush of color.

But, my favorite product of the night had to be the COVERGIRL Outlast Brilliant Glosstinis! I picked the bright yellow shade and couldn’t believe at how shiny the finish was!

It’s the next day, haven’t applied any topcoat, and no chips! And it dried quickly as well! They are so cute with the brightest shades to choose from. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of NERVO as they were spinning records — each nail was a different color! I wanted them all!

Being as pale as I am, tanning can be a trying pastime. Between choosing the wrong color and the usual awful self-tanner smell, I rather get my teeth pulled (I might be embellishing on that comparison). But Jergens, however, has changed the rules of the self-tanning game.

Jergens Natural Glow +Protect Daily Moisturizer Sunscreen SPF 20 ($8.69) gives you exactly that: a natural glow. My skintone doesn’t tan easily, and most self-tanners have to be layered for me to get a good shade. Natural Glow in Medium to Tan gave me a gorgeously tanned color.

I only put it on once, and I was amazed at the beautiful, natural looking shade that was left behind. This product is very easy-to-use. No need to go overboard exfoliating yourself raw — this product glided over my skin and dried rather fast; I was able to get dressed within minutes and it didn’t stain my clothes!

Another great point to this product: No nasty self-tanning odor! It had a pleasant smell — Jergens has reformulated this product with breakthrough odor-reducing technology. I am fair-skinned, blue-eyed and a blonde, which is about as far from emulating the Kim Kardashian look as you can get. Although my look suits me just fine, there are times when I am trying to keep up — not with the Kardashian clan — with Kim’s makeup looks.

How does Kim wear so much eye makeup and not seem to be in pain? Not a grimace, nothing watering, no redness… It appears that she does have talent after all!

It is no secret that I have the world’s most sensitive left eye: I cannot wear contacts and have been sporting glasses, which have morphed into my trendiest and best accessory for over eleven years.

When it comes to makeup, I wear very little around the eyes and I’m extra selective about products that cater to sensitivity. More often than not, I skip eye makeup altogether. For special occasions (i.e. weddings and parties), I use a tiny bit of primer under my brows and a very light pink shadow over it. I’ve been trained to stick with Clinique for my sensitivity, but when daring to use eyeliner, Make Up For Ever is the only brand I trust — it stays put without a smudge through rain, sleet and tears and I know it won’t migrate into my eyes.

Then, I make sure my brows are groomed perfectly. Mostly satisfied with this routine, I still wonder if it is possible to enhance my lashes and line my eyes, to give myself that sculpted, almost alien-like high cheekbone appearance that instills envy (yes, come on, admit it – Kardashi-envy).

I decided to seek out the advice of sought-after makeup artists and ask them:

“Is it possible to get Kim’s look if you have sensitive eyes?”

Realize, when reading the responses that follow, eyes  have varying degrees of sensitivity. If you are as highly sensitive as I am, you might want to skip  eye makeup altogether and focus on the rest of your visage: a clean looking face with the right blush contouring and brow shaping will naturally draw attention to your eyes anyway.

According to Meira Joselit, a New Jersey based makeup artist and Arbonne consultant,

“Fake lashes and glue, so obviously a part of the Kardashian routine, hurt sensitive eyes!” So skip  it, she advises. “You can get the smoky look, but a tight line (which is inner-rimmed and  basically touching the eye) in addition to fake lashes with glue will really irritate your eyes.”

She recommends Arbonne’s water resistant and super-gentle mascaras, and she herself has extremely  sensitive and easily irritated eyes. If you want to get a good line and a “big draw” on the upper  eye lids, Joselit likes Smashbox’s black gel liner because it stays put. She also recommends Trish McEvoy Intense Gel Eye Liner ($28.00) pencil as another non-smudge pick.

Celebrity makeup artist Alison Raffaele, who was Bobbi Brown’s head assistant for three years and who employs techniques that have graced famous faces (i.e. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Sigourney Weaver and Giselle Bündchen), points out that it is important to understand which types of eye makeup cause sensitivity:

“Among those that are irritating are powdered eyeshadows, particularly ones that contain shimmer or sparkles (the particles can easily get into your eyes when applying) as well as anything purple (purple pigments are well-known allergens).”

She adds that anything with fragrance — the latex in eyelash glue, fast-drying eyeliners (liquids, gels) and mascaras with fibers — are seldom compatible with sensitive eyes.

“Now, this is not to say that every person with sensitive eyes will necessarily be sensitive to all of these things; this is simply a list of the most-likely culprits,” explains Raffaele.

So, What’s A Sensitive Girl To Do?

Raffaele delineates the following steps for getting Kim Kardashian’s look:

1. “Use cream shadows and liners. These fly around less than the powdered kind, making them less likely to get into your eyes. To set them in place and keep them from smearing (particularly darker shades), set cream eye shadows with a colorless setting powder like my own brand’s Transparent Finish ($28.00)

The best way to do this is to dip a velour puff into the powder, work the powder onto the puff (don’t use too much) and then press the puff onto closed eyelids. To get a major highlight under your brow bone, use a luminizing product like my Incandescence Luminizer ($28.00). The optical diffusers in it reflect light without the use of potentially irritating shimmer particles.

2. “A big part of Kim’s look is an obscene amount of lashes, but many sensitive girls are not able to tolerate lash glue. To make the most of your natural lashes, curl them with a good eyelash curler (I like the ones by Tarte, Kevyn Aucoin & Shu Uemura), then apply your mascara.

To make your lashes thicker, you can dust them with a bit of powder (like Transparent Finish) in-between coats. Just make sure you are not using a loose powder with its first ingredient being mica.

3. “For eyeliners, the safest best is to use a cake liner with a brush, which is a powder you dampen with water to make a paste. Pencil liners can work for sensitive eyes, too, but they tend to smear and melt down more quickly than cake liners.

4. “One thing a lot of people don’t realize: natural bristled brushes must be sprayed with loads of chemicals to make sure there are no bugs in the hairs when they are imported into the US. An easy way to avoid these chemicals is to use only synthetic bristled brushes, which do not need to be fumigated.”

Shlomit Brandwein, a makeup artist for M·A·C and a Pro-Team Artist for Lancôme, has her own thoughts on getting the Kim K. look for sensitive eyes:

“As much as you first notice her smoldering, smoky eyes, Kim’s killer contouring and perfectly sculpted brows are what really make her a makeup icon.

If you have sensitive eyes and rimming your inner and outer lids with dark liners is a no-no. Don’t worry, just focus on skin, brows and lip techniques to get the Kim K. look.

First thing is mastering the extreme contouring and complexion perfection. The basic principle of this look  is to have the center of your face highlighted with lighter shades and have the perimeter sculpted with darker ones.

- Select a yellow-based concealer two to three shades lighter than your natural skintone and blend it under your eyes, down onto the cheek along the edge of your nose, center of your forehead, down the bridge of your nose and mid chin.

- Then, take a face powder/bronzer two to three shades darker than your skin and blend it across your hair line, on temples, into the hollows of your cheeks (the indent under cheekbones from the ear to corner of the mouth) and onto your jawline.

- Finish off with a soft highlight on the cheek and brow bones and a nice peachy-pink blush on the outer apples of the cheek.

A Tip For Getting Stand-Out Brows:

Once you’ve shaped them, either by tweezing and/or filling them in, outline the skin around them with your concealer. This leaves them perfectly polished.

When she goes lighter on the eyes, Kim is known to wear a beautiful, bold lip in shades of bright reds/crimsons and plums.

When wearing a bold color you always want to line and fill in the lip with a pencil in a matching shade. This helps to keep color from bleeding. Kim always has full lashes, and no makeup look is complete without them.

If you find mascaras way too irritating, I highly recommend lash extensions. These are applied by a qualified technician who permanently attaches all-natural hair to each lash. After about an hour, you have lush, long lashes. You don’t have to worry about irritating mascara or glue from false lashes that you apply on your own!”

When I told my young children that I was about to try a moisturizer infused with GENUINE GOLD, they began to “ohh” and “ahh” at the concept. I received the Oro Gold 24K Vitamin C Facial Booster Serum ($198.00) and 24K Deep Day Moisturizer Cream ($28.00), as a “Hot Stuff Giveaway” gift for audience members at the Wendy Williams Show.

Although I am a tad skeptical by nature, I left the show excited to try a product that combines the purest form of a most-treasured mineral with vitamins E & C. I had read about the new gold creams on the market, and the fact that scientists and doctors were discussing the anti-aging benefits and antioxidant properties of this ancient metal.

I had also read that Cleopatra used a pure gold mask to keep her skin looking its best. I wondered if my own skin would shine and glow as a result of   using the products – in much the same way that gold does.

After days of applying Oro Gold’s 24K Vitamin C Facial Booster Serum and Deep Day Moisturizer Cream, I noticed several things: While I really love the silky feel of the serum, I learned to use very little on my face! I emphasize those words because if you are about to try the serum, you must apply it sparingly. On the nights that I used a pea-sized amount of the product, which easily spread across my face, I then applied a light layer of the moisturizer over it.

My skin was clear and supple in the morning. I don’t have wrinkles except for a crease between my brows, so I zoomed in on that specific area for inspection. I didn’t notice any significant difference in its  appearance, but appreciated the overall smoothness of my face and I will continue to keep an eye  on that crease in the coming months.

The Deep Day Moisturizer Cream does not contain an SPF, so use a foundation that contains SPF 30. The 24K Vitamin C Facial Booster Serum and Deep Day Moisturizer Cream work together to form a great primer, so you don’t need that extra product.

My foundation went on beautifully over each of these products, individually and together. If you’re worried about being over-moisturized (i.e. if you have combination skin that has a tendency to get oily in the T-Zone), just use the silky serum and an SPF foundation over that. I did this one day when I paired the serum with Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation SPF 30 ($42.00) — it barely looked like I had any makeup on due to the incredible priming effects of the serum.

There was one night when I mistakenly slathered on too much of the serum and applied the moisturizer. The next morning I woke up with notably larger pores and my skin felt oily. I was sure that I was on the verge of a breakout. I remedied the situation by washing and exfoliating with Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub $34.00).

Then, I applied pure Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel ($3.97) as a pre-moisturizing serum. When that dried, I slathered on Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 17 ($22.00), a very gentle product that can be used on the most sensitive skin. I did this three-step routine for the next three days.

On the fourth day, I decided to go back to using Oro Gold. This time, however, I would use it correctly. After using the proper minimalist amount of serum and moisturizer (pea-sized for each) for a few days, I had a clear complexion and my pores were back to their normal size. The verdict: gold is good, but only in small doses, so don’t get greedy with it. If you are going to try Oro Gold and hope to look like Holly Go Lightly, definitely… go lightly.

Are these products worth the hefty price tags? At present, it is hard to say. I find that cheaper alternatives, like a natural vitamin E cream from the health food store, paired with pure aloe vera gel often does the trick for me. However, while I now possess this coveted commodity (I love to say it: gold!), I will keep using it. I did notice on the company’s website that some of the Oro Gold products contain green tea extract, which is loaded with antioxidants and is touted as being great for skin.

I try to drink as much green tea as I can in a given day in the hopes that it helps my skin in addition to my overall well-being. When I run out of my free samples of Oro Gold, if I haven’t suddenly “struck gold,” I’ll remember that old expression about the price of tea in China – one I can certainly justify for beauty! AmLactin body lotion has been used in my home for many years. My mother suffers from severe eczema and dry skin — so much so, she does not grow hair on her legs. I recall her going to the dermatologist and being prescribed a medicated lotion called Lac-Hydrin. Lac-Hydrin (also known as Ammonium Lactate) definitely healed, exfoliated the dead skin and moisturized my mother’s skin.

Old Look

She began looking for an over-the-counter, lotion-type product that was comparable to the Lac-Hydrin prescribed to her. Her dermatologist recommended AmLactin. This was over  10 years ago and this is still the lotion of choice for my entire family.

New Look

About a year ago, I went into my local drugstore and I literally stood by the lotion section, looking for a forest-green and white bottle of AmLactin… for about 15-minutes. Finally,  frustrated, I decided to drive to another drugstore to see if AmLactin was available elsewhere. To  my surprise AmLactin totally revamped its packaging (and yes, they left their formula and ingredients the same!).

Of course, then I realized how dependent consumers are on the packaging of their favorite products, and how depressed and down-in-the-dumps we feel when our favorite product “disappears” off the shelves… And what a great feeling it is when we rediscover our favorite product wasn’t discontinued, it just received a makeover!

AmLactin is an EXTREMELY moisturizing, fragrance-free lotion. It leaves your skin moisturized all day. Although I don’t suffer from severe dry, rough skin, I do use AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion to keep my skin hydrated and lightly exfoliated.

AmLactin is a bit pricey (I pay $20.00 for a 20 ounce bottle from Costco), however, AmLactin is DEFINITELY worth every penny. Not only did AmLactin give their packaging a new and improved look, they added these new products to their line:

Summer is the season for surf, sun, and showing off! Many women are focusing on getting fit for the warmer weather – but time spent in the gym can take a toll on your hair.

Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice great style to break a sweat (just look at Nicole Richie above!). TRESemmé celebrity stylist John D. has compiled his top tips to help you keep your hair in shape before, during and after your workout:

 1. After you exercise, quickly blow-dry your hair to get rid of any excess moisture that may have accumulated during your workout. Apply TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo (available in Volumizing, Smoothing and Color Care varieties), concentrating on the scalp and roots of the hair.

Then, shake the hair out using your fingertips to evenly distribute the product. Your hair will be refreshed and ready to go.

2. To avoid the tell tale “dent” that seems impossible to flatten after a workout, try a loose topknot instead of a ponytail.  Loosely twist the hair on top of the head, and secure with a few hairpins rather than an elastic. After your workout, release the pins and shake out your hair for a volumized look.

3. To protect your hair from breakage caused by tight elastics and hairpins, try holding the hair back from the face and shoulders with a handkerchief or cloth headband. This will limit breakage and will eliminate dents.

4. If you decide to use a blow dryer, flat iron or other styling tools, be sure to apply TRESemmé Platinum Strength Heat Protect Spray (about $4.39) to shield your hair from harmful heat.

Eva Longoria on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival

We were thrilled to be invited to join a Google hangout with L’Oréal Paris Spokesperson Eva Longoria today.  Eva is currently at the Cannes Film Festival in France but she took time out of her busy schedule to have a live chat with a few beauty journalists from all over the world.

We each got to ask Eva a question about her beauty routine. Below are her responses:

Skincare:  Eva strongly believes that good skincare is the foundation of your beauty regimen. She says “if your skincare is not right, it affects your makeup, which then in turn affects your hair”. She also emphasized the importance of sunscreen. She always uses the L’Oreal Sublime line as she says “if I don’t wear sunscreen, I end up getting spots.”

Makeup: When asked, what makeup products does she always carry around with her, she says her must-haves are lip gloss and powder (says her nose tends to get shiny which does not look good on camera).

Hair:  Eva confessed that her hair gets frizzy in humid weather (it’s currently raining and humid in Cannes). To keep her hair smooth, she says she uses a ton of product including L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hair Spray.

Nails:  Eva loves nail polish and changes color every week.  But prefers solid shades over the trendy nail art.

Body: Eva loves bronzer and wears it year round.

Dream Product: Eva ends up mixing foundations to find the right look and wishes there was one foundation that adapted to everyone’s skin tone.
